Research firm Dell'Oro predicts that the global market for passive optical networks is expected to grow to $7 billion by 2022, thanks to applications such as 10Gbps EPON's next-generation PON technology.
The market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of nearly 40 percent over the next five years, Dell'Oro said.
Other next-generation PON technologies driving strong market growth include XGs-PON and NG-PON2.
"In the case of PON technology for residential broadband services, 2.5Gbps GPON will remain mainstream due to the low price and sufficient speed. However, for many growing use cases, such as commercial services and mobile payback, the next generation of PON technology has the capacity and capability that the current generation of technology lacks.Explains Alam Tamboli, senior analyst at Dell'Oro."Xgs-pon and NG-Pon2 shipments are still small, but we expect XGS-PON growth to be even faster. The XGS-PON and its 10Gbps symmetric bandwidth should be able to meet the needs of operators for commercial services and mobile return.""He added.
He said the 10 Gbps EPON has attracted strong attention in China, noting that the current generation PON has been widely deployed in the market.
